Spinal Decompression – A Safe, Effective Solution for Back Pain

Written By Cy-Fair HealthCare Associates on June 19, 2020

Spinal Decompression in Houston TexasSpinal decompression reduces pain by relieving pressure.

Pressure on the joints, muscles, and nerves of the spine causes debilitating back pain. The pain can be so intense that it impacts the sufferer’s ability to work or engage in activities they once enjoyed.

Spinal decompression is a safe, effective, and non-invasive treatment that can ease back pain.

The Theory Behind Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical treatment that creates negative pressure. Pulling the spine taut eliminates pressure on the joints, muscles, and discs, thereby reducing pain.

Decompression therapy also encourages the proper flow of oxygen and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). When there’s been an injury or other types of trauma (like poor posture), scar tissue or muscle tension can impede the flow of CSF, which carries vital nutrients to the discs, nerves, and brain. Those nutrients promote healing. Better healing leads to:

  • Reduced back pain
  • Better flexibility
  • Increased energy
  • Reduced risk of long-term damage

How does decompression therapy work? A mechanized traction table is used. The patient lays face up or face down (depending on the table). A harness is placed around their hips and attached to the bottom of the table. The lower half of the table then moves back and forth slowly.

What Conditions Can Benefit from Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

Decompression therapy is ideal for back pain. Specific conditions that can be improved with this treatment include:

  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Worn spinal joints
  • Arthritis
  • Damaged or diseased nerve roots

Can Everyone Benefit from Non-Surgical Decompression Therapy?

Not everyone is a good candidate. Your Houston chiropractor will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether you can benefit from it or not.

Spinal decompression is contraindicated for patients who:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have broken vertebrae
  • Have had a spinal fusion
  • Have an artificial disc
  • Have had failed back surgery
  • Have osteoporosis
  • Have a spinal tumor
  • Have a spinal infection
  • Take blood thinners
  • Have a condition that affects the integrity of the spine

Spinal Decompression Treatment Series Expectations

At your decompression appointment, you can remain fully clothed. The appointment will last between 30 and 45 minutes.

Depending on the severity of your back pain, you can expect to have 15 to 30 sessions over the course of four to six weeks.

Some patients experience relief from their pain during the very first session. Others require a few more visits before they start to notice changes in your mobility and pain levels.

Your Comfort, Safety, and Wellbeing Are the Top Priority
